the coffee she made for me. she always designs just what i need on the foam.
I was at a local coffee shop that I frequent often. I stood at the register, my eyes moving up and down the menu, feeling a little overwhelmed by the choices and not at all sure what I wanted.
“Do you need help?” the beautiful blue doe-eyed Barista asked. She’s there every time I come in.
“Yes! Yes, I would actually love some help.” I responded, blushing.
“Today, you look like a lavender white mocha”. She said.
I smiled because that drink does feel a bit like something I would choose had I seen it on the menu and I wondered how she knew that about me.
We exchanged a few bright eyed glances and smiles and then she asked while foaming the milk…
“If you could be any role in a movie, what would it be?”
I giggled, surprised by the question and then found my mind drifting to The Princess Bride. That film holds such good memories for me at a time when my life felt so simple and innocent and less complicated.
“Princess Buttercup”. I answered.
Her whole face lit up. “Good one.”
Me, the hopeless romantic and lover of long curly hair and beautiful renaissance dresses and believing in someone’s word…and in “true love”. ; ) I am sure if I had enough time and mindfulness in that moment (without anyone waiting behind me in line), I could have come up with something deeper and perhaps indie but I love my knee-jerk answer, for that moment and how it made me feel.
So now I’d like to turn it over to those that are reading this. If you could play a role/character in a movie, who would it be and why?
{Boho Boy answered “Han Solo”…which is so him!}

January 22, 2013
Fun question… I would have to be Audrey Hepburn’s character in Roman Holiday. I’d get to be a princess, wear amazing clothes, see Rome and hang out with Gregory Peck. Sounds amazing to me.
January 22, 2013
I LOVED your question on this post and my answer is kind of convoluted. I would be the Elizabeth Gilbert, played by Julia Roberts, in “Eat Pray Love.” Though this answer seems cliché, I just cannot shake the fantasy of traveling for that long and absolutely cherish the process of “finding oneself” while abroad. I’ve done a fair share of traveling, but every time I watch the movie (and yes, I read the book as well [years before the film came out ]) I yearn for longer and longer periods of travel.
Great question.
PS – I’ve followed the blog for years (before you had Cedar) and I really appreciate your posts. As an educator, I applaud you and BoHo boy for your courage in accepting and exploring Cedar’s unique gifts and challenges he may face in the future.
~Gassho~
January 22, 2013
My immediate response was Dorothy, which is the same response I would have had at Cedar’s age
January 22, 2013
Holly Golightly or the princess in Roman Holiday … Rome, by all means, Rome!
January 22, 2013
It’s funny, but each character that comes to mind is both male, and from a book rather than a movie. I’m having such a hard time. I have not yet figured out a movie character that i would want to be. Intriguing! I love so many movies, but thinking of experiencing them first hand is a whole different criteria. The only one that comes to mind for me is Elizabeth Bennett from the Colin Firth version of Pride & Prejudice.
January 22, 2013
belle from beauty and the beast!
January 22, 2013
Lara Croft ~ kick butt adventure girl
January 22, 2013
ohhhh, that’s a good one, I’d be either Lloyd Christmas from dumb and dumber or Amelie…both roles would be a challenge though since I’m not a boy and my French isn’t that great;)
January 22, 2013
Sally Owens from PRACTICAL MAGIC, definitely.
January 22, 2013
ahh, love this question. I would play Elizabeth Bennett, Pride & Predjudice (2005). Love her.
January 22, 2013
Amelie!
January 22, 2013
Oh I love this question! I’m such a free spirit and I love helping people, plus I’m a single mom with a daughter, so I’d have to say Juliette Binoche’s character in Chocolat! The fact that it’s set in France and Johnny Depp is in it is just a bonus! c:
January 22, 2013
…Erin Brockovich
January 22, 2013
Oh my gosh, no hesitation – Beatrix the Bride, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2.
She is my hero.
January 22, 2013
Amelie….because she looks at the world with some sort of childhood innocence…and most important of all…discovers love from a man that is right for her
January 22, 2013
It would have to be ‘Roz’ (Barbara Streisand) in ‘Meet the Fockers.
She is a funny,confident,free,beautiful woman.
I love the scene in the film when she gives Robert De Niro’s character a Lomi Lomi massage.
Soooo funny.
January 22, 2013
Corie Bratter. Jane Fonda’s character in Barefoot in the Park. She’s just so willing to jump into everything all at once and nothing first. Every single thing she does or encounters is an adventure and I really admire that kind of bravery.
And that hair doesn’t hurt either…
January 22, 2013
If it was a “big screen” type of movie, I would be Eowyn from Lord of the Rings. She is fierce, confident, and takes down one of the most evil characters in the movie…and then at the end (if you know the book version) becomes a softer, graceful woman who wants to grow a garden
If I went with more of an indie film character, I would be Maggie from Waking Ned Devine. She’s a carefree Irish woman and she gets to end up with her sweetheart in the end.
January 22, 2013
Lara Croft as well!!!!
January 22, 2013
eowyn from lord of the rings…and that drink sounds so delicious!!
January 22, 2013
Inger Nilsson in Pippi Longstocking. She was my hero!
January 22, 2013
Ripley in the Alien films (as played by Sigourney Weaver) because she is strong, resourceful and kick ass!
January 22, 2013
Amelie from the movie Amelie. I love the way she sees the world.
January 22, 2013
Milly from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!
January 22, 2013
Definitely Trinity from the Matrix. I’d like to be able to always take care of myself like that.
January 22, 2013
Barbarella! played by Jane Fonda)
January 22, 2013
Well, I guess I need to see a few more movies…I love the feel of Diane Lane’s character in “Under the Tuscan Sun”…but I think for a romantic feel I might like to be Demi Moore’s character in “Ghost”…and that I’d prefer romance than a kick butt superwoman character completely surprises me. Wow.
January 22, 2013
Amelie from “Amelie”….Lotty from “The Enchanted April”….Eowyn from “The Lord of the Rings”….Moonie fron “New Waterford Girl”…Chihiro from “Spirited Away”…Sophie from “Howl’s Moving Castle.
January 22, 2013
M’Lynn from Steel Magnolias. She’s one strong mama!
January 22, 2013
Wyatts from “Some Kind of Wonderful” and Gordy from “Stand by Me”
January 22, 2013
Roberto Benigni in Life Is Beautiful. If I could provide as much magic and hope for my child in the face of such atrocity, and do that even in my last moments no matter how scared I might be inside, that would be so powerful.
January 22, 2013
Catherine McCormack – from both Braveheart and Dangerous Beauty. I loved her long hair and her gorgeous-ity. And that she truly loved. In both movies.
January 22, 2013
I was surprised I knew right away! Amelie! Sigh.
January 22, 2013
just reading through the comments and seeing I’m not alone!
January 22, 2013
Beatrix from Kill Bill for Me too!
January 22, 2013
Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. Because she is adventurous, daring, and courageous but still adorable and cute. She loves deeply but doesn’t take life too seriously.
January 22, 2013
Erin brockovich as played by Julia Roberts. I need that feistiness in my life.
January 22, 2013
Joan Wilder played by Kathleen Turner in “Jewel of the Nile” and “Romancing the Stone” would be great or Julie Andrews in “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Grand question!
January 22, 2013
sarah from labyrinth and barbarella la la la … hee. fun!
January 23, 2013
Love this question! I think Princess Jessica because she was wild woman enough to marry her beloved Mickey. They are also the only wedding that could rival that of your Boho Bro and is beautiful woodland fairy. An other worldly Romeo and Juliet from ~ The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns.
January 23, 2013
So fun! I just had my first lavender latte… yum. Sarah Owens – Practical Magic.
January 23, 2013
Definitely Ana Pacscal (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal)from Stranger than Fiction. Her tats, that feistiness! Love it.
January 23, 2013
That’s TATTOOS…. Gosh if you read it too quickly that description sounded VERY different! Sorry!
January 23, 2013
No doubt, I’d be Arwen from Lord Of The Rings. Strong, gentle, beautiful, powerful, majestic, and tenacious in love.
January 23, 2013
I’m with Lyndsay – Elizabeth Gilbert (Julia Roberts), Eat, Pray, Love! As soon as I started reading the book I thought – OMG I could have written this…and then when I saw the movie, there were parts in there that just moved me to tears they were so close to home. I have been lucky enough to spend 5 months in Bali in 2011 volunteer teaching and am taking 6 months off this year to go back as well as go to India…I too am still trying to ‘find’ myself and where I fit (at age 49!)…
January 23, 2013
Oh how I am LOVING all of these answers! Keep them coming…it feels so good and is bringing me so much joy.
How could I have forgotten Amelie & Arwen? Mmmmm…yes please.
January 23, 2013
Sally Owens is one of my favorite characters in a movie- I love Practical Magic too!! And, it seems so many of us love Amelie and Elizabeth Gilbert. So many wonderful roles to choose from. I also love Viane from Chocolat- she rocks!!
January 23, 2013
Frances from Under the Tuscan Sun is my first thought, so I will go with that. She a represents a woman whose heartache ultimately awoken her and led her to discover her self, her voice and her happiness. We can’t avoid the heartache part of life..but, I yearn to awaken to a life of my design and happiness as this character did.
January 23, 2013
Oh, I have always secretly been Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She’s just so carefree. She’s also so beautiful (but that now makes my answer really shallow)! lol!
January 23, 2013
I’m going to go with a TV show…… Edith from Downton Abby. I know she’s very whiny and needy at the moment, but I think underneath all of that there is a strong independent woman who will take on the world.
January 23, 2013
I love this post. Love love love. It made me so very happy, especially because when I move back to the States I want to open my very own quirky coffeehouse with baristas who ask questions like this.
I’m going to have to get back to you on the question though. It’s a tough one.

Amelie! Such a beautiful movie, not only in the cinematography but in her perspective on life. Live simply, go after what you love, make it an adventure.
January 23, 2013
I would be Sally Owens from Practial Magic, OR Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, OR Alice from Resident Evil OR the Lady Amalthia, from the long ago movie, “The Last Unicorn” (she is named when she is cast into human form)
LOVE this question!!! LOVED reading the responses!
January 23, 2013
Kahu Paikea, the courageous, truly ah-mazing main character in Whale Rider. I can resonate with how unseen, unheard, and misunderstood she felt, and how she came to peacefully take her place in life, and in their tribe, where a young girl had yet to ever come close to experiencing.
January 23, 2013
ohhh, I love this. I tend to find bits of myself in a lot of characters. Bits that stir my soul, resonate with me deeply, or bits of someone that I want to strive to be more like – whether it’s more compassionate, kind, giving, etc. And those are the characters that I carry in my heart and remember. I think that’s why I was a film student back in the day… I loved that feeling of watching a film and thinking, “oh, this person understands… they get me”, and I wanted to do that for someone else. //
I immediately thought of these characters (there are more!) — Kathleen Kelly in You’ve Got Mail: spunky, sentimental, witty, genuine. Claire in Elizabethtown: scatterbrained, quirky, curious, creative. And my favorite – Jo from Little Women (June Allyson is my favorite Jo): strong, stubborn, emotional, fiery, passionate, dramatic, and kind of a badass in her own way
(Oh, and Sara in A Little Princess… it’s a children film but she’s been a hero of mine since I was in the fourth grade – a beautiful, brave, imaginative soul)
January 23, 2013
beautiful invitation. thank you. though I can marinate in the question and come up with something maybe more profound, my instant response was hermione granger (for her fierce wit, compassionate heart, and love of all things magic).
January 24, 2013
Probably Jo from Little Women. She was my first taste of a strong firey female charachter. I agree with Francis from Under the Tuscan Sun. It’s one of my favorite movies! Baby from Dirty Dancing would be fun too because dancing and Patrick Swayze! Whoohoo
loved this!
January 24, 2013
Ohh I LOVE THIS! I think I would be Belle from Beauty & the Beast. Singing clocks & candelabras, dancing dishes, a wildman to tame & a motherly tea pot. It sounds like an ideal place to me at the end of a long long day filled with too many dishes and too few song & dance routines.
January 24, 2013
Ohhh, fun question! My first thought was Kathleen Kelly from Youve Got Mail… I just love every inch of her. But Id also love to be Idgie from Fried Green Tomatoes…
January 24, 2013
Love it! I would be… Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. I just love her… strong, smart, super buff, uncompromising, and so protective of her family.
January 25, 2013
This was fun to think about! I think I would be Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans (I am a lady and when I saw the movie I thought he was dreamy, but at this point I just like the idea of running through the woods a lot and being totally capable and self sufficient).
January 25, 2013
Kira from The Dark Crystal
January 25, 2013
Oh I walked down the aisle to the theme from The Princess Bride – one of my favorite movies:-). Would love to be her
January 25, 2013
I think I would like to be Margaret Hale from North & South. I love the book and the BBC tv version. She’s not the favourite at the start but she grows throughout the book and eventually becomes a more caring and kind person. Plus she finally realises she loves John Thornton at the end (and Richard Armitage is very easy on the eye). I love Elizabeth Gaskell’s characters
January 26, 2013
Frida from the movie of her ilfe. I love her determination, her free spirit and her art.
January 26, 2013
Lucy Honeychurch from A Room with a View.
January 26, 2013
I totally agree with Helena ~ chocolate, France, Johnny Depp & all that wild gypsy music!
January 26, 2013
Isak Dinesen’s character, played by Merryl Streep, in Out of Africa. Love, travel, strength, adventure, independence, and did I mention I’m Danish as was she. That all would be wonderful.
January 27, 2013
What a beautiful post! I love the interaction between you two and what a spontaneous question! Trinity from Matrix as I think it would be amazing to wear those outfits and kick some bad guy booty, but I also would like to be Lady Mary from Downton Abbey, strong with quick wit, again with an amazing wardrobe.

Mary Haines (played by Meg Ryan) in The Women. I admire her moral character, the ability to admit her faults and her tenacity to plunge into the unknown all on her own.
February 3, 2013
love this prompt…
I will go with my instant answer…though as I read down the list of those above I can relate to them as well
I guess it is the reflection of each of us that we see in one another…
my answer
Irena Sendler (played by Anna Paquin)…The Movie: The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler
to stand up so strongly in the face of such adversity, for your fellow man…just thinking about that kind of courage brings me to tears…I would like to have that kind of courage and conviction
love and light
February 10, 2013
Oh, my goodness. I think it would be Idgie Threadgood from Fried Green Tomatoes. I like how she bbq that abusive husband!
February 11, 2013
The artful dogger from.olive twist and just because ……

Neytiri from Avatar, an earth-loving warrioress <3
