{last night…propped up on pillows while mama watched his breathing}

{today was a lazy couch day. daddy & cedar playing with his new iPad}

{i am so honored to be his safe space}
I wish I could say I was one of those mamas that are really strong when their child is sick. But, I’m not. My whole world halts and I feel it with him. I just want to sit near and stare at him while he sleeps and hold him when he wakes and make it all go away. When he cries while he is coughing, tears run down my cheeks or anxiety fills my heart. My mind sees flashes of emergency room visits and hospital stays. Perhaps all mamas feel this way but some are less messy about it. I know what Cedar needs most is love and I feel confident that he feels that from me and that is what brings me comfort and gives me permission to be gentle on myself.
Its been a heavy and emotional week in regards to some family stuff but Cedar becoming really sick was a not so gentle reminder of where my energies need to be right now. Both Boho Boy and I have taken a few trips to the Co-Op for natural remedies and the drug store for the big guns. Tomorrow I am taking him into a new family Naturopath. Its all chest and head congestion related and his cough seems really painful but no fever, thank goodness. I am sitting here on the couch with him. It is 8:30pm and he’s been asleep for 3 hours. I think this might mean another long night of staying awake with him against my chest, reading and watching the tellie. I had so much I wanted to do today but everything has slowed and all that matters is this moment, his breath and his comfort.
I am tired and worn with dark circles and bags under my eyes but I am stepping into that peaceful warrior within.

{I am slowly finding my footing as a daughter, sister, wife, friend and especially a mama}
Thank you to all of my dear friends and family that have been sending Cedar love, prayers and healing thoughts. Man, he is a little dude blessed with so much love.
Also…sending all of you a warm cup of healing soup on this day of remembrance (9/11).

Hi, my little one is just 3 & always developed croupy coughs in winter, lots of antibiotics later : ( we found metagenics 5 mushroom drops. It has stopped little colds developing- we just got thru winter in Australia with no colds! Definitely worth checking out & keeping it on hand – it’s only available through a practitioner ( naturopath.) all the best! Jen x

I get you. My 10 month old was sick 2 weeks ago with a high fever, cough and cold. I was worried sick the entire time. For two days, she slept on me at night because she was coughing and crying too much. It was a nightmare and i’m glad we’re on the other (better) side now.
September 12, 2011
I think a lot of moms can relate to how you are feeling. Hope he feels better soon.
September 12, 2011
Lots of love and healing vibes to you all. Be assured Denise…all Moms feel the same way! It’s tough when your little ones get sick and you can’t make it better. You’re doing a wonderful job. Just remember to not let yourself get run down in the process so that you get sick too. Elderberry syrup is my “go-to” for winter immunity boosting. Starting when the weather gets cooler I take a spoonful a day as preventative. But I’m sure you know all that already! Wish I could come give you all a nice, relaxing, healing Reiki session!
September 12, 2011
This is such a beautiful picture of you. It’s a good reminder that we find the courage and the presence of mind to deal calmly with what needs our attention at the time. Take pride and joy in your mothering skills, my dear.
September 12, 2011
Sending you and Cedar love. You’re beautiful.
September 12, 2011
Yes, all us mamas feel the same when our little ones are not feeling well. You are such a beautiful and amazing mama. Little Cedar is blessed to have you. Prayer that he is all well. Hugs to you both!
September 12, 2011
Oh poor babe! Knew what those rosy cheeks meant the moment I saw the pic. Not to worry, mum, I think we all go a bit off kilter when the littles get sick. Hugs and warm thoughts to you all…hope you’re all feeling better soon.
September 12, 2011
Sending healing prayers to Cedar. The ache we feel as Mommies when our littles ones are sick is so hard to describe, but you did so beautifully. Know that in the wee hours of the night when it seems a bit overwhelming we are all wrapping our arms around you sending our love – from one mommy to another.
September 12, 2011
just chiming in to let you know that you are not alone in feeling messy when your babe is sick. i agree with the other mama warriors on here who say that we all feel this way. it is so very hard to see our little ones not feeling well. sending lots of warm snuggly healing energies to cedar, mama, and daddy! (your little light will be running around like crazy again before you know it!) xoxoxo
September 12, 2011
Poor baby and mama! I hope Cedar gets well soon. Sending healing thoughts your way.
September 12, 2011
So much love and healing energy heading your way! So tough to watch your baby be sick. I totally get this. Don’t forget to take care of YOU while you are taking care of your sweet boy.
Have you tried a little eucalyptus oil {diluted in a carrier} massaged into the soles of his feet? Works like magic when my babies are congested. Feel better sweet boy and sweet mama!
September 12, 2011
Ohhh poor litttle thing….the minute i saw his angelic sleeping face i knew this post was about him being sick because anyone with a sweet babe can recognize those flaming cheeks. take it slow and be sure to take care of yourself so you can take care of him.
Be well.
September 12, 2011
sending cedar loving, healthy thoughts…and the same for his mama! xo

Sending love to Cedar! Have you heard of fermented cod liver oil? After reading all about it here (http://www.modernalternativemama.com/blog/2011/3/7/green-pastures-cod-liver-oil.html), I can’t wait to try it out with my family.
September 12, 2011
Please do NOT take offense at this. This is just some ideas from my culture and belief system. they may fit for you. Just some bites for thought anyway. I love you and give this in utmost love.
When Turtle would get sick, like head cold/chest stuff, I’d have to stop and take an inventrory of what had been going on in the house/environment before that. We believe that children are utmost suceptible to energy in all it’s balance/imbalance. So if there was any stress in the house even if it was not played out by/in front of her she could still get sick as a result of my stress or what was going on in the environment. (I have a lot of extended family Ick that I had to deal with for a bit. it did not have a good ending though.) And even though i never exposed her to that, i was carrying the drudgery stuff around with me, energetically.
it was good for me becuase it taught me to up my energy protection and always cleanse myself and my house before I touched her.
Does this make any sense? I love you all, and send you healing love. xoxoxo
September 12, 2011
PS… I know exactly what you mean about the images and fears that play out in your mind. I had the same when she’d get sick. It’s scary.
Dont forget, a mothers love is the most healing of all. I healed her many times. and now that she is older and can feel herself getting sick she knows how to heal herself if she feels something coming. much love, hoping i am not stepping on your toes, I mean only love and input.

I’m so sad to hear about Baby Boho that I wanted to share this with you. I’m not sure if it works, but I would try it.
In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu.
Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died.
The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different,
The wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn’t believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping
The family healthy.
Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work.. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got
the Flu.
Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:
Thanks for the reminder. I don’t know about the farmers story.. but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia and needless to say I was very ill.. I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar…placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs.. sure enough it happened
Just like that.. the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.
Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful
antibacterial, antiseptic properties.
This is the other note.
Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don’t know what to blame.
Maybe it’s the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu’s and is the very reason we shouldn’t eat an onion that has been sitting for a time
after it has been cut open.
LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS
I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of
mayonnaise.. Mullins is huge, and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the Mullins family. My friend, Jeanne, is the CEO.
Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.
The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He’s one of the brothers Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula.
He’s even developed sauce formula for McDonald’s.
Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed’s answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially- made Mayo is completely safe.
“It doesn’t even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it’s not really necessary.” He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quaint essential picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick. Ed says that! when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials
look for is when the ‘victim’ last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it’s not the mayonnaise (as long as it’s not homemade Mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It’s probably the onions, and if not the onions, it’s the POTATOES.
He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it’s not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It’s already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!) Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you’! ll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you’re asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break
down.
Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.
Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections
because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.
Please pass this on to all you love and care about.

we are so grateful for your love and warm thoughts, everyone…it all helps…every bit of it. LOVE the energy here and the love that comes.
dearest mbb, i promise you i did not take what you shared personally or in any way negative. i felt your love and am so grateful for your willingness to share what it is your belief system is and of course you have me SO intrigued! i am an open individual. i learn from others beliefs and i always gather the nooks and crannies that resonate with me. what you shared deeply resonates with me! wow. thank you for this. recently we had some deep heartache in our family and even though we tried our best to keep it from cedar, he is so closely connected to the energy and to us (as you said children are), so i am not at all surprised that this may have happened with him. now that i am more aware of how powerful these energy shifts can be for cedar, i will be more mindful about protecting it from getting to that point. and yes, i often feel most comfortable with helping to be cedar’s healer but man, sometimes we can just get filled with fear. especially because he is not sick often and it seems when it happens, its HUGE to him and to us. but today at our naturopath appointment, i found myself feeling like no one really knows what he needs as much as my husband and i do. it was an empowering visit. i may write a post about it next. BLESS YOU.
bless ALL of you.
xo

My kids have the cough and stuffy thing going on too. Simple saline spray has been helping the most. Not easy to get it in but worth it to make them feel better. Hope cedar feels better
September 13, 2011
Denise,
glad it resonated so well with you. (Though, I knew it would.) Yes, email me anytime, I will be happy to chat some more about this, because I see so much of the same beliefs/parenting practices in you that mihigna ki and I have. you are great for the heart. of everyone. xoxoxox
p.s dont forget, you will always be your child’s’ best advocate..and sometimes, his only one. have your read my articles online about this sort of thing?

Blessings and healing rays to little cedar from accross the ocean in Thailand. I am the same when my daughter is sick everything just stops and I drop everything. I am learning to relax into it rather than fight it, as my must-do-do-do self wants to.
Also very interesting about the bad energy, I must learn to be more mindful of our family yuck affecting our daughter. I have not been terribly aware so far.
Thanks as always for the fascinating debate and insight.

i don’t know dude, right now you and i are paralleling emotionally (family, mama, finding ourselves), and i like to think it’s because we share our birthday.
coming here stops my pity parties, knowing that we’re all just trying to do our best and that includes acknowledging that perhaps the world is as anxiety-inducing as it feels.
big love. xo
September 13, 2011
Hi Denise, I hope your sweet baby boy is feeling better. My three kids have asthma…they started having asthma flare ups around 2 1/2 yrs old. Is he wheezing? Sound winded when he talks? If he’s still feeling crummy, I would encourage you to have a doctor check his breating/air flow…..just to be on the safe side. Praying for both of you. Hugs

Here’s to a speedy recovery Cedar.
September 14, 2011
that first photo just makes my heart hurt. always would rather have been sick myself than to have sick children. (even now with them all grown, it is still so hard to watch and not have some magic potion)…and now it just makes me so sad when my grand-babies are ill….they just seem so little and vulnerable! i am like you still denise….i want to just stay awake and watch them breathe and see their little bodies finding rest…….you do know little cedar best and he finds his strength in yours…..so hoping that he has good days very soon and is up and running wild and free! xo

Sending healing wishes to your home <3 My mother has often said that motherhood is the hardest job she's ever had, but I know you will be guided by love in your journey.
September 14, 2011
I am the same way when my little one gets sick. A total wreck on the inside, and sometimes on the outside. …but I don’t think he knows it. One time he was really sick and I slept on the floor next to his bed for 3 nights straight. (he doesn’t sleep well in bed with us.) I’m not complaining about it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is completely exhausting though. You are just so gorgeous by the way. Dark circles and all.
September 14, 2011
poor little cedar. <3 and don't worry, i do the same when my little man is sick. i feel his anxiety–the hardest thing for children is that they don't really UNDERSTAND sickness. they don't understand WHY they feel so crappy. so the best gift i can give him is to stay calm (always a challenge), and send him all the light i can afford to give.
speaking of, i'll send your little one some light when i do my meditations this week. and may you, tired mama, get the rest you need soon. <3

I am a mess when my girls are sick, esp. when they were that little…
hugs to you mama. your little guy is so lucky/blessed to have you for a mom!
and I KNOW how blessed you feel to have him as your son! you are a great pair!
