marmie & me… a few months ago
Dear prayer warriors, change makers, healing spirits and positive affirmational souls ~
I am calling on all of you to lift my marmie up in your thoughts and prayers. She’s been ill for a while now and her immune system is breaking down and on top of that, got salmonella poisoning last week and dropped an alarming amount of weight. With all of her winter clothes and shoes on, she weighed a bit over one hundred pounds, which tells us that she is below 100. It really hit me when we skyped yesterday and I asked her to “show me your bod” (so me) and when she lifted up her shirt I hid my gasp. Bones. Too many bones and at her gorgeous age, she needs to be protected and warmed by muscle and at least some fat. I tried to be positive, as you know…that is my role in the family and told her she looked beautiful and “better than I thought” but truly, it was difficult to see. Especially because I cannot be there to bring her my healing soup and help her around the house with her very spirited puppy-dups and my dear sweet father that needs special loving care for his diabetes and back issues.
I plan on fattening her up over the holidays and I know she’s counting on it too. ; ) Another role of mine in the family! We are wrapping her up in love and hope and prayers and I wanted to invite you to do the same, if you are moved and inspired to.
If any of you have any ideas on healthy ways to put weight on when your tummy is extremely sensitive, that would be wonderful. She reads this blog and is very invested in and charmed by all of you who come to this space. She’s protective of me and celebrates the gentleness and kindness that gathers here.
I told her she first needs to get better before worrying about eating foods that will pack weight on but perhaps there are ways to do both at the same time.
Thank you, lovelies…teary gratitude.
ps. do you love my new word “affirmational?” yah…me too. ; ) and isn’t my marmie just beautiful? love her so.

The relationship between daughters, mothers, grandmothers is irreplaceable. I hope people more knowledgeable than I come forth with good dietary solutions. My own mother and grandmother are in Italy for ten days and I have had much worry and distraction during their absence. Loving one another is what we can do. This is repayment for the blessings they’ve bestowed upon us. As usual, love your vulnerable truth.

When I had a friend who was sick and dealing with upset tummy/weight issues, she would get drinks from places like Jamba Juice. Very high in calories but easy on her tummy.
Sending lots of prayers for strength and healing!

Hey, In England you can go to the chemist (drug store) and get high calorie juice drinks, the chocolate ones are soooooo good.
For the rest of us trying to loose weight they are strictly off the menu, but we give them to our malnourished patients in the hospital and the patients love them!
Full of nutrients as well
November 17, 2010
thank you dear souls.
yes, her doctor gave her some type of protein drink that she’s been consuming for a few days now. i wonder if it is the same type of drink you are talking about, violet. i will check. i will see if she also has a jamba juice near her!!

Gosh your mom (and you) are so beautiful. My mom is 86 has CLL so lots of immune issues and has the world’s most delicate stomach. She drinks Ensure or Boost, although not every flavor agrees with her. She likes baked potatoes, scrambled eggs and other bland foods. Be careful of juice drinks because they can irritate.
She weighs 94lbs soaking wet and very delicate but has been this way for years.
I am sending my thoughts and food prayers out…..

oh marmie! i’m wrapping you up in warm healing light–that you start feeling better, and get some meat on those bones.
i hope that you are taking care of yourself– while you are looking after all of your other loves. <3

I would recommend mineral rich bone broths, they will really sooth a delicate tummy and they have so many amazing healing properties. Eggs and butter may also be easy for her to digest. She probably would benefit from some digestive support to actually help her break down the food she’s consuming. I’d be careful w/ the juices and premade protein drinks- since she has digestive issues she most likely has candida overgrowth and the sugars in those drinks may cause more issues in the long term.
I also thought i’d pass along the name of someone i’ve worked with whose done wonders for my very complicated digestive issues as well as immune and other problems i have had, (thyroid, etc). After seeing more than 5 holistic doctors Theresa is the one who’s finally been able to help me plus she’s been the most affordable! She’s located in Santa Rosa, Ca but she does consults by phone as well. Here’s her website and phone number http://www.tvernonlac.com phone: 707-544-0661. Hope this helps, your mother can rebuild her body and experience vibrant health for years to come.
Best wishes- Maria

Affirmational Exponentified!!! She is gorgeous! Holding the space for immaculate healing. Might I suggest extended time looking at the colors orange/yellow and foods of this color. Color therapy has shown to be successful for folks wanting to gain weight. Are bananas hard on her tummy? I am a huge fan of raw foods but not sure how to introduce more bulking foods in this situation. Can she manage cashews? Raw cashews might be worth trying. You can make milk with them if it’s not to hard on her. More love, light and healing…

My sweet partner needs the same sort of calorie-building foods. She tries to have little snacks every two hours and drinks Ensure. I try to make things that have a lot of avocado (she can’t handle very much fat but avocado seems to work well) and protein, like a yummy quinoa-avocado dish with tempeh. She also makes protein shakes with special protein powder, nonfat yogurt and berries (and all sorts of other supplements). Best of luck and much healing power to your sweet marmie.

She’s so beautiful! I hope she feels better soon – you are a wonderful daughter!

Much love & warm thoughts & good energy prayers your way. I know that rice is always a perfect filler that is gentle on the tummy. I hope all the best for her & will use this positive energy in my meditation tonight. Much love you beautiful soul, you.

Thinking of you Denise and sending healing thoughts to your mom & love to you both.

As someone who had ulcerative colitis and now am living without a colon I have gone through many times where I had to eat, but my tummy was so sensitive it was hard. How does she do with dairy? I ask this because sometimes yogurt or sherbet based smoothies with easily digestible fruit like bananas are really good for calcium and vitamins. I also always have luck with carb based products. For instance mashed potatoes, rice with milk and cinnamon(like a homemade rice pudding), oatmeal, peanut butter on soft bread. I pretty much lived on these foods for awhile. Maybe go to a website for those with colitis or irritable bowel, and look at low-residue diets. They are generally really easy on the tummy and bowels. Sending positive thoughts your way and for your Mom. I know how hard it is to not be close enough to visit family as much as you’d like. My mom has multiple sclerosis, and with her living in Michigan and me in Minnesota, it’s so tough. Your blog always lifts me up Denise. I feel like though we’ve never met you are a kindred spirit to me, and so much of what you write and express really hits home for me.
((hugs))

healing thoughts your way.

I don’t know exactly what she’s going through but I know that my Grandma died this past May and for the last year she’d been about 80 lbs at 5’4 which is…not good. The doctors told us to throw anything and everything that she felt like eating at her. If she wanted chocolate cake for breakfast, lunch and dinner, all the better because at least it was calories and that’s what counts. Some of her favorites were from a cookbook called: “Deceptively Delicious” by Jessica Seinfeld. LOTS of yummy things (even sweets) with veggies hiding inside for a bit of extra goodness. Love and light and energy to you all!

what about drinking pediasure for kids?
or is there something similar for adults?
hope she gets back her health soon!
prayers for her!

love & healing to you marmie…
my 91 year old grandmother went through a period last year where she just had no energy. she had been unwell with an infection of some kind, and while she recovered from the illness, she said she felt completely zapped, tired, she had lost a good amount of weight too (and she’s tiny to begin with). she had no energy whatsoever, and no appetite.
i’m not generally a supplement person, but someone turned me on to this when i had to have some intestinal surgery and was reduced to liquids for a while, and as my teetoo lives by herself, i wanted to make it easy on her to do something to help herself without zapping any extra energy. i sent her this – it’s a vegan protein green drink supplement made from whole foods – that you can mix with water, orange juice, soy milk…whatever you fancy. it was developed by a triathlete so it has an athletes amount of calories which is good if you’re needing to put some weight on.
she drank a glass 2-3 times a day…and began feeling better and is now back to her sprightly self. she got lots of rest and drank lots of fluids and did all kinds of other good things too, but i think this helped her get some weight on and get her appetite back.
(i like the natural flavor best…)

i do hope you feel strong and healthy again soon!

When we were sick and needing to be restored, mom would start us on gingerale and soda crackers. If we managed that, then it would be a bit of broth (chicken or beef, but beef always made us stronger, faster). Then she would cook oatmeal in beef broth. Then chicken and rice soup. Then scrambled eggs with plain, bland toast. Hope there’s something in there sweet Marmie can tolerate, and I’m praying for her full return to vigor and joyful good health. All blessings on your lovely family! XO

Hi there. I certainly will be praying. I know this is a very out there suggestion but I have heard that there have been success stories for folks with weak immune systems drinking breast milk. I don’t know how you go about sourcing it but it has been used to great effect. I know it’s weird but hey I am a real hippie! I hope she feels much better soon.

Hi Denise,
My mom used to drink Ensure, which is a type of drink you mix with milk/water and comes in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavour. My mom had cancer and weighed 48kg but gained quite some weight with the Ensure.
praying for your family xx
November 17, 2010
oh yes, your mother is really beautiful!
a very good thing would be argan oil or oil of the black cumin. (both are very good oils, taste good, good for the weight and balm for the whole gastrointestinal tract. )
acupuncture to the three points of the stomach, she could put three warm stones on these points, if she hasnt an acupuncture doctor in reach. the three points are easy to find. first three fingers under the sternum (bone in the middle of the rips) and the other two points are where the free rips are ending, in front of the body. you can feel the ends under your finger. one right, one left. these three points, stimulated with warm stones for example, will help to recover and to calm down the gastrointestinal tract. she should put the stones there for 20 minutes, she will feel very relaxed after this.
much love, d.
November 17, 2010
Wow – so many good suggestions here.
Another thought… since she doesn’t have much protecting her bones, as you say, I think raw milk would be especially beneficial for the calcium and other healing agents. It can also help replenish her fat stores, which is so important.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Marmie. Yes, she is beautiful. Hope she is well again soon. <3
November 17, 2010
Denise, your mama is a radiant beauty. My thoughts and love encircle you both. May health and rejuvenation kiss each part of her, swirling through and awakening each cell in its most vibrantly joyful state. There have been so many good suggestions here. When i was sick and underweight my doctor, too, recommended i drink Ensure. She also wanted me to eat nut butters and avocado…but it all depends on what your mommy’s body accepts. I wish i could go with you and love her up with care and heart-made food. Ill be thinking of you both. Please let us know how she is doing <3 xoxoxo

Hi Denise, I don’t have any advice for you on your mother’s diet. But I wanted you to know I have offered a prayer for your beautiful mother, for you, and your whole family.

when my hubby needed to put on some pounds after his appendix burst I made him homemade puddings, he tolerated them really well when all other foods turned his stomach.
love to your marmie and you.
November 17, 2010
May she (and all of you) be happy, well, and free from suffering.
Don’t forget the avocados; they’ve been great for my little one when she’s under the weather and still needing to keep her weight growing.
November 18, 2010
poor thing……have you tired aloe vera juice ? mix it with just a tiny bit of apple juice to take away the bad taste….but it works to make the tummy better so the fattening up can begin……
November 18, 2010
much love and positive energy to your beautiful marmie and your lovely self
November 18, 2010
My little one and I have had more than our share of tummy troubles and when they strike we rely on the BRAT diet. (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce & Toast) Avocado and yogurt are added after a day or two and eggs slightly after that. Smoothies made with banana, rice, applesauce, avocado, yogurt and honey are a good way to get a broad spectrum down and sometimes I switch that up with apples and peanut butter. Warm wishes and I hope she is feeling well soon.
November 18, 2010
Sending much love and healing thoughts to your beautiful marmie. May she be wrapped in light and health and feel much better very soon.
November 18, 2010
She is beautiful, and yes I will pray that My Jesus will help her through this difficult time and I will also pray for you and your sweete tender heart for comfort. I will pray everyday until you give us an update.
Have her get some oat straw at natural grocers and to make it as a tea with honey. It is soothing to the tummy. Dandelion root tea will give her good vitamins that she will need also.
November 18, 2010
i am thinking some thick, yummy smoothies or milkshakes might be very good for your marmie. i am glad you will get to be with her soon. i am sending much love and positive energy the way of you and your family.
November 18, 2010
When restarting eating it’s best to go the way of gradual. First and foremost it’s important to avoid dairy because when you get an infection like salmonella it wipes out all of the lactose in your gut so you need a little time to re-secrete. If you don’t, you will continue with diarrhea and struggle to absorb the food. In the hospitals we start with: 1) Clear liquids (jello, broths, tea). When you can tolerate that you can move to: 2) “full liquids” which are things like cream of wheat (made with water), thicker soups, applesauce 3) “Bland” aka the good ol’ BRAT diet: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. And after that you can advance as tolerated (then you can start fat building!). Best not to go with fatty food right away because they can be irritating and hard to break down. Eating a bunch of small meals can even things out. Also, probiotics are good to boost the flora after salmonella shook things up a bit (and antibiotics shook things even harder if they were taken!!). We always encourage patients to use probiotics, some patients use yogurt, but in the case of an intestinal infection it’s usually better to go light on the dairy. Hope this helps! More importantly love and prayers coming your way!

Sending Loving Energy…..
November 18, 2010
your mum reminds me of an angel. not to mention, she’s a redhead like me, i love that…
i am lifting her up with lots of prayers, thoughts, and love. we are all holding her close. she seems like a fighter, i have a good feeling in my heart that she’ll be okay. i hope she feels the warm embrace of all of the wonderful energy and strength we are all sending her!
all i keep thinking in my head is “probiotics!”… that will really strengthen her immune system. my mom works in homeopathic medicine & nutrition, i’ll ask her for some tips/ideas. <3
November 18, 2010
Hi Denise. I’m a nursing student and I know what might help:) She should drink as much Ensure or Boost as she can get! the off-brand is ok too. It should have 250 calories and it is suitable for lactose intolerant people. It has all the vitamins and nutrients needed and is very soothing to the body. I like the vanilla ones. I had the flu and these things seriously saved me. We reccomend them to anyone that comes into the doctor’s office where I volunteer. They taste like melted ice cream and come in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Protein is important, and these provide that when eating other things is hard.

Denise, I have popped in here often over the years, but I think this is the first time to leave a comment…I wanted to send some healing energy to your beautiful mother. It must be very difficult for you, not being able to be with her at this time. A simple chicken soup is always my home remedy when loved ones are not well. And perhaps, if she can’t stomach all the ‘bits’, she could just sip the broth…wishing her a speedy recovery x
November 18, 2010
I am pregnant and have recently developed a sensitive stomach (first time out of 5 pregnancies). I get food poisoning symptoms from eggs and raw dairy. So in my opinion, if she is super sensitive right now, I would avoid those foods. I eat a lot of rice toast with almond or sunflower seed butter (high in fat). Also, avocados are sensitive on your system, full of nutrients and high in good fats. Do you have a vitamix? I would try and do some raw veggie soups with avocado. Sooooo full of nutrients and easy on your gut. Thinking good thoughts for you and your family. I also wanted to mention that I live about 1/2 hour away from B’ham. We were just there last week! =)
November 18, 2010
hello loves!
oh man…i am so very grateful for all of this wisdom and love and support. see? i was right. the wise prayer warriors and healers and big hearts come here. such good stuff!!

Oh I am so sorry your Marmie hasn’t been feeling well darling. She is so beautiful! I know how much you love each other and how difficult it is to see your momma not feeling well. Nuts and nut butters come to mind. With toast? Organic vegetable juice and wheat grass juice to get in the nutrients without too much in teh belly-and the juices are so easy to digest. Also maybe she could tolerate some plain quinoa? I know it is a mild grain -the highest in protein if dairy and nuts don’t sit right with her. Eggs may be good like someone else mentioned. Sending lots of love and healing thoughts to her. xoxoxo

Praying for your beautiful mother. Also, you could try coconut oil and coconut milk. It’s very nutrient dense and is a good healthy fat. There are many recipes online but one of my favorites for my skinny husband and skinny children is stir fry. Saute the veggies in a generous amount of coconut oil then add coconut milk at the end as a sauce and we add curry but that may be hard on her tummy. She could add other gentler spices or even peanut butter for a delicious sauce. Blessings!

Infinite blessings and Well being! I would suggest Green Smoothies for Beloved Marmie.
They will energize and build her body up with the live enyzmes, vitamins, minerals and fiber. They are quick and easy to make and since you drink it is easy on the digestive system.
One simple recipe is 2 good handfuls of spinach…1 Medium size banana,,, 2Tablespoons of Olive oil ( for omega vitamins and food fats from the oil)….6-oz or a little more of orange juice…. agave nectar sweetner only if you need it to be sweeter(lower glycemic index than sugar and honey) a heaping tablespoon of spirulina (blue-green algae that has protien/ trace minerals vitamins excellent stuff) To make it… in a Blender (crush and puree the spinach and banana with about 4oz of water…add olive oil and spirulina while its still blending… then add orange juice switch blending mode to high speed blend… you can crush and blend ice cube if you like really cool drinks .. I would suggest for your marmie to add a ice cube or 2 if she really needs it to be colder. I hope you enjoy it ! It will gently mineralize and energize her body.. and it taste good…even kids like it!!! infinite blessings to all you love and care for… tracye
p.s. check out The Green Smoothie diet by Robyn Openshaw and http://www.rawfamily.com!

We’ve taken the whatever sounds delicious route – a loved one has cancer you see and she gets to eat whatever she wants. Ice cream for breakfast and whatever sounds tempting for dinner. I tried to encourage more fibrous foods and healthful choices, but our sweet patient likes Iceberg, so… there you have it. I am praying, sending love, desire for yummy foods and hope your way.
