I have been asked via email or comments quite often how Boho Boy and I make our yerba mate in the morning. I wanted to share it here, in this space…with a little visual to make it more tempting. ; ) But first let me share our story behind mate and how it became a daily ritual.
When trying to get pregnant, we let go of a lot of guilty pleasures…one of them being coffee. My parents are from back East (Massachusetts to be exact) and one of the many traditions they brought into California when the Andrade family migrated was a love for creamy sweet coffee. I grew up with the smell of java every morning as a child. I longed for the day when I was old enough to have my own cup but I settled for the coffee nips my Memere would pull out of her purse during her visits to California. Morning coffee was never just a drink to get us going. It was a tradition, a ritual…almost a spiritual experience. We knew to be quiet when mom and dad were enjoying their first cup. My father would get up an hour earlier than he needed to, so he could ease into his day with his steamy hot mug. As my sisters and I got older, this morning quietness was part of our own lives. Darlene still tried to preserve this ritual while raising teenagers. Pamela while raising three toddlers and me, up in my studio apartment in Berkeley, overlooking the Bay Bridge. Three sisters living very different lives, yet still carrying on that tradition of “Shhhh…just let me sip and stare out the window while I wake…”.
So, having to give it up for the sake of happy sperms and eggs colliding in perfect harmony was HARD and uncomfortable…but we were willing to do whatever it took.
I knew myself well enough to know that cold turkey just never cuts it with me. So I first transitioned with Teeccino herbal coffee that we picked up at Whole Foods. From there, we tried Guayaki dark roast mate. We drank both with either vanilla almond milk or vanilla rice milk, depending on the diet at the time. Following the first time we did the master cleanse, we went off of caffeine completely for a while. That felt so, so good but at the same time, I really missed my ritual. Herbal teas and rice milk just didn’t feel the same to me. It didn’t have that rich, creamy thing going. I disconnected from needing that ritual and as much as that opened up time and space for other things, I longed for that sacred creamy sweet time again.
Then it happened. Boho Boy and I were on one of our many trips to Victoria, B.C. We were walking around downtown and stepped into the Solstice Cafe. A groovy, artsy, comfy, warm vibe of a place. A place that attracts unique and passionate folks, sitting in funky furniture having rich and intellectual conversations. We were looking at their teas and in large chalky white words we saw “Yerba Mate Latte”. We also saw that they had vanilla rice milk AND agave nectar (which has been our sweetener of choice since trying the raw diet a few years back). We both practically squealed, ordered two and found our big comfy chairs. When we took a first sip from our steamy mug, we looked at one another and simultaneously said “mmmmmm….”. It was different. Creamier. Greener. Yummier than the mate we were used to. It was pretty much a dessert in a cup. So, we asked them what mate they used and they told us it was a green leaf blend, not the brown, dark roast one. It was pure air-dried mate. Another difference was that it was steeped in all milk. We used to make it with hot water and then pour a bit of milk in the cup. But they used all 100% vanilla rice milk. Mmm Mmm good.
Since then, it has become our nectar of choice in the morning. For a long time, we would boil the vanilla rice milk in an electric kettle and pour it in our french press but we felt like that might be too many calories, so we are back to using water and heating up the milk in a saucepan and using half milk and half mate in our mugs. So here is the recipe::
Loose leaf Guayaki San Mateo Yerba Mate
Trader Joes Vanilla Rice Milk (any vanilla rice milk will do but this one is the creamiest).
Agave Nectar
French Press
Electric Kettle
We steep the yerba mate in our french press while heating up vanilla rice milk in a sauce pan. We get our mugs out and put about 2 teaspoons (sometimes more) of agave nectar in the mug. When both the milk is hot and the mate is done, we first pour the milk into the mug and fill it half way. We then pour the mate in until the mug is full. I was taught to always pour the milk in first because it will mix more evenly. Stir in the agave nectar from the bottom and Voila!
Prepare to be addicted. I’ve already converted a few friends after they have stayed the night.
Yes, its still caffeine in a cup. Its perhaps just a wee healthier than coffee. Who knows. Always controversial, really. All I do know is that this is one guilty pleasure I don’t want to let go of for a long time. It makes me happy.

sounds divine!
you are totally selling it!
and I love your little cafe focus going on right now
i am on the works for thinking up an idea for my own little joint so i am loving the inspiration!
i haven't had your mate drink, but it is the foundation of this monavie energy drink i drink instead of redbull
go mate!

I just found your blog, and it is beautiful. Your photos are taking me away from the stress in my day right now.
I make mate with vanilla soy, so I will have to try the rice milk soon. I wanted to add that for more coffee- like richness, buckwheat honey is a great sweetener to try.

Oh yum! I'm not a huge rice milk fan, but wondering how it would do with vanilla hemp milk. mmmm… also coffee nips! I buy them now and again because they remind me of my grandparents.
March 3, 2010
loving that you discovered the matte latte at solstice. it was one of my favourite spots when i lived in that town…though i never tried the matte due to my longstanding love affair with coffee…but i'm tucking this recipe away for the day coffee and i finally break up!

ok, my problem with mate is that it always tastes like an ashtray. I've tried it over the years and can't seem to get away from that….
so you're saying the airdried mate might not have the ashtray taste?
I'm seriously addicted to the coffee routine and desire the sweet, hot, creamy drink in the morning. I may try it. But the sweetened vanilla rice milk and agave may be too much sugar for me…hmmmm. So freakin particular with the morning routine.

I have that brand of Yerba Mate right now! But mine is in the tea bag already….I always forget about using my press for teas….I've been drinking it made w/ water and just w/ honey or agave nectar as well. Can't wait to try it with rice milk. Thanks for sharing!

like you I feel very connected and comforted by my morning, sometimes evening and afternoon cup of creamy coffee. I will definitely try this one though, sounds lovely.

p.s. let me know about the head cozy if you'd like one or want to do a giveaway.

I am very tempted to try this- I recently gave up milk but my almond milk in my Chai tea isn't cutting it so maybe it's the tea that needs to change. But it sounds delicious and relaxing.

Wow that sounds good. We pretty much live on matte, being in Central America and not being coffee drinkers. We drink it "black" though. I will certainly try this method as a dessert.
As a side note the caffeine in matte is different than normal caffeine. Works on the para-sympathetic system more than the sympathetic system. Meaning it is great for stimulating your insides.
Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Hun,
just letting you know I've been drinking yerba mate for awhile now, (since I saw the little thing on your facebook) but I reckon I'll have to try it your way. it totally sounds yummy

sometimes those little guilty pleasures are what keep us sane…
I have a teenager, so I know what I'm taking about
March 4, 2010
Are the ingredients you show and list all available at Trader Joes?
March 4, 2010
I will have to make this yummy nectar in the future! Thank you for your recipe!!
March 4, 2010
christine, i think with the vanilla rice milk and agave nectar, the ashtray taste you once were grossed out by might go away. ; )
lisa oceandreamer, everything was at Trader Joes except for the yerba mate. we have to get it at our whole foods. i think henry's carries it too? otherwise, you'll need to order it online!
enjoy enjoy!

mmmm, my parents are the same as your parents – morning coffee is a ritual for the soul! my dad always says, "mmm, there is nothing like that first cup in the morning – it's the perfect start to the day!" my parents are very big coffee drinkers, and i followed in their footsteps when i got older. coffee got me through college, let me tell you.
my roommate and i would make coffee in our dorm junior year almost every day instead of buying from the coffee shop, and soon girls would be standing in our doorway with their coffee mugs, "i smelled it from down the hall! can i have some?" i've never been able to give it up (i have a pot brewing now, in fact!)… but we eat mostly organic, super healthy foods anyway, so i think one guilty pleasure is okay.
(and i can't resist trader joe's coffee, it's too good!) i have heard so much about yerba mate, especially recently, and i can't wait to try it!

hi denise,
it took me a while to realise that "mate" is pronouced mah-tay and not mayte as we in australia like to call our nearest and dearest.
do you like chai latte? that's usually my choice of drink because i'm not a coffee drinker, but still like the foamy-ness of a latte.
March 4, 2010
Mmmm … this sounds yummy!
I always smile at how much you adore your yerba mate … now it's good to know what that even is!
I can relate to the java stories you tell about your family. I just started working for a coffee company (Storyville Coffee Company), and we're hugely devoted to fresh, french-pressed coffee experience. It's coffee like I've never tasted before, and I am loving it at work every day. Yums!
March 4, 2010
OK–update!
I brewed up some chai mate I had in the cupboard but had never tried-and with a little agave and soy creamer it was pretty darn good. (The ash taste was minimal)
I have a friend who drinks plain mate all day long and a while back I told him I thought it tasted like an ashtray, he was all, "oh my god, that's it exactly! I totally know what you mean…." and that led to discussing bongwater….and well, I totally turned off to mate.
But now I'm a little bit cured of that.
March 4, 2010
hmm very interesting. i too am coffee obsessed and understand the morning ritual. growing up my mom would always get up an hour before us to have a quiet moment to herself with a cup of coffee too
March 4, 2010
I'm a long time reader but I normally lurk.:)
My mother-in-law works for guayaki and it's lovely to see such a wonderful company being recognized. I'll be sure to pass it on…..

Sounds delish! Amazing, too, what focus a particular ritual can bring to a day.
March 4, 2010
Ooh, I have the same mug!! I love it.
) TJ's vanilla rice milk is totally a staple in our home … and your nectar sounds positively yummy. I'm off caffeine now while the babe is growing, but I'd love to try your sweet concoction!!
March 4, 2010
I LOVE agave nectar but unfortunately my nutritionist recently sent me this and suggested I return to maple syrup or honey:

Hi! I'm loving your blog and the sweet, thoughtful spirit you have. I've been very encouraged by you.
I found out about your blog from a "dready" friend and just recently got my own dreads. Common thread.
I was saddened about agave nectar by the same article as Helen (above) read. I've since turned to raw, local honey for its enzymes and assistance in local allergen immunity. I especially love the taste of wildflower honey!
I grew up in CA and was able to obtain local honey through Noah's Honey…although that was in Orange County and I'm not sure exactly where Noah's farm is. But just in case that helps…!
Anyway, I may have to give your mate a try!!
March 5, 2010
I looooove this photo. I'm such a dork about mug photos. Pretty much EVERY time I have a hot drink, I want to take a photo. It's so dreamy. Next time I'm over…you will be making me this secret concoction!!
xxoo

this sounds so lovely! i love my morning coffee ritual too, it's the moment and the time taken that i am probably most resistant to giving up. i tried matte once before, but never as a rice milk latte ~ i'll be sure to give it a go. thank you for sharing

Hi Denise,
I'm a long time reader but rarely comment. I have been drinking matte all my life (in Brazil it's common for even children to have some tea in the morning or snack time). I "import" my own from Brazil.
I have never tried it with vanilla Rice Milk, even though I drink rice milk with coffee every morning. After reading your post, I'll have to try it first thing in the morning!
Isn't vanilla rice milk delicious? It's great by itself too. I was never able to go back to cow's milk after I made the switch.
Thanks for your post and instructions. It's all in the rituals and little things that set the tone for our day, isn't it?
March 6, 2010
oh how tempted i've been to try some yerba mate…even had the same exact brand/type you use but i chickened out and went back to coffee. i will attempt another go at it since i'm with you – no matter how i try, i cannot acheive the same level of creamy satisfaction with tea (i also use agave, despite it's own controversial nature and rice milk, but with my coffee). i think you've also furthered my wish to own a french press. thank you
March 6, 2010
Over a week ago I read a post where you'd mentioned drinking yerba mate and was interested in what it was. When I went to the coffee/tea shop in my town to spend the afternoon, I saw they had yerba mate latte on their board. Of course, I had to try and LOVED it! I then ran to our food coop and got myself some for the week to try out in place of my morning coffee. I like the information you shared about how to make it and adding vanilla rice milk. I've already added rice milk to my shopping list to give that a try
Thanks for sharing – I think you can add one more to the converted list!

I'm excited to read this, sounds absolutely delicious! I just found out that Wegmans carries yerba mate!!! So excited. I can't wait to try it. Sounds perfect for a weekend morning.
I recently found your blog and I've been browsing through but this is my first post. I just wanted to share that Cedar is absolutely adorable and your adoption story is so lovely. It makes my heart happy

yay! I trust you on your review with yerba mate.
bless you and thank you.

Just a prompt to really investigate the effect of Yerba Mate. I was interested in it and researched but although there are plenty of health benefits, there were also some potential cancer links. Please just check it out thoroughly before it becomes your staple of choice.

Mmm, sounds delicious! I wish TJ's wasn't so far from me. Just found your blog- following!

Hi Denise,
I had to google this exact post, as I found FINALLY yerba mate from our city
it was NaturAvignon happening, with bio and local producers and i got a chance to taste this. I bought immediately one green leaf bag, i’m in heaven! i shouldn’t drink coffee and this might be a good thing to change. thank you for introducing this long time ago, it did really stick on my mind!
